Bearing Bad Tidings is a comedic tale of greed and gold set in the California Gold Rush of 1849. Our first web movie, the story is about two brothers, Johnny and Billy, who have traveled west from Montana to strike it rich at a gold mining claim near Hot Plate Flats, just north of where “the Yuba River meets Haypress Creek”. Through the course of one day panning the river, the brothers’ experiences remind us of the hazard of greed and its effects on family, countrymen, humanity.
The Kehoe Nation of San Francisco recorded and produced “El Dorado (Bearing Bad Tidings)”, the title theme of the movie. Rockin’ the San Francisco Bay Area for many years, The Kehoe Nation’s original lyrics, sound and style create a tapestry that breathes the risks in taking Johnny and Billy’s wild ride. From the Catskills, The Tremperskill Boys, a local group of talented performers on fiddle, acoustic guitar, claw hammer banjo, accordion, flute and vocals, fit the environment of Bearing Bad Tidings perfectly. Woven together along Johnny and Billy’s path, songs “June Apple Mix” and “Star of the County Down” provide a natural sounding score to fit the location and time period.
Tom Romero, San Francisco Bay Area classical guitarist and music teacher, contributed “Poncho’s Theme” and “Gold Diggin’ Lullaby” for the movie. Ominous and peaceful, these songs add unique thematic aspects to the film.
